Constant appearance of "Unfortunately, system manager has stopped".

Also seeing failures for other core apps like hotspot and phone. How can I debug and fix? This seemed to start "out of the blue," but I'm guessing that Google or T-Mobile did a slipstream update of some sort, since I didn't add or upgrade any apps in this time frame. It's an annoyance due to the stack of pop-up errors, but also a real problem. For instance, today my alarm clock app failed due to these errors, and it's just good luck that something else woke me up on time. Any hints or suggestions would be welcome. This is on an HTC One, by the way.
